There is very little question that San Francisco Mayor London Breed absolutely hates the 4/20 celebration on Hippie Hill. Back in 2013, when she was still supervisor of the Haight Steet’s District 5, she said, “I have serious concerns about the appropriateness of the event. I spent the last decade working with children, many of whom come from families scarred by drug abuse. I am not comfortable with an event that encourages such rampant drug use by adults and minors alike.”

And now that we are on the verge of the first 4/20 that will have legal cannabis sales in Golden Gate Park, Breed referred to it at a Monday press conference as “one of our favorite times of year, 4/20,” her voice clearly dripping with spiteful sarcasm in the word “favorite.”

But Breed also announced some new rules at that press conference. Per the Chronicle, she said the event would only admit people 21 and over, and would be checking ID’s. (This has been public knowledge for weeks, and has been all over the official 420 Hippie Hill event page and Instagram account). But she also announced that proof of vaccination would be required, even though the event is outdoors. So make sure you have a vaxx card, or a picture of it, or your QR code, stoners!

Age verification at 4/20 is not entirely new. At the most recent Golden Gate Park 4/20 in 2019, they were checking IDs and admitting 18 and older. Since there will be cannabis sales in the park this year, they will only admit those who are of legal age to buy and consume cannabis.

“We know in the past, we’ve not been smiling about 4/20,” Breed said, referring to the event's historical problems with trash, drunkenness, and traffic. And throughout the press conference, she basically sounded like she didn't want people to show up.

“Just so you all are aware, I checked the weather and there’s a 40% chance of rain,” she said, referring to this Wednesday, April 20. “So who knows what may or may not happen on 4/20.”
