Military Truck Stolen from Santa Rosa Base Runs Rampant Through Bay AreaDustan Woodhouse on Unsplash

Authorities in Northern California are hot on the heels of an unusual vehicle theft, as someone made off with a Humvee from a National Guard armory in Santa Rosa on Monday night. Since then, the 15-foot long, 6-ton beast has been seen maneuvering the streets of Sonoma County with reckless abandon.

Officials believe the thief scaled the fence at the armory located at 1500 Armory Drive around 10:20 p.m. before smashing the military truck through the gates and making their escape, taking the four-wheel-drive adventure for a spin, as reported by CBS San Francisco. The stolen Humvee has since been spotted at three different locations, driving without headlights and exhibiting reckless behavior, adding to the difficulty of finding it.

The last known sighting of the bold bandit and their purloined prize was on River Road near Wohler Road, close to Forestville, as per ABC7 News. California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Marcus Hawkins shared with the outlet that it is likely the thief has some military background, a pretty safe assumption given the unique nature of the vehicle and the skills required to operate it.

Both the CHP and Sonoma County Sheriff's Department have been alerted and are on the lookout for the renegade Humvee. Despite hopes that it would be found abandoned with the arrival of daylight, the search has so far proven to be fruitless, leaving authorities scratching their heads and undoubtedly asking themselves where on earth could someone hide a stolen Humvee?

Lt. Col. Brandon Hill assured the public, via an email to SFGATE, that no weapons or sensitive items were inside the vehicle during the time of the theft. He added that the National Guard is actively working with local and state law enforcement agencies to track down and recover the stolen Humvee.
