Memorial Park Closures, Campsites and Trails Temporarily Shut Down for Fuel Reduction WorkSource: County of San Mateo

San Mateo County Parks is making moves to ensure the safety and security of residents and visitors alike, as they embark on a crucial fuel reduction project. According to a press release from the County of San Mateo, the project will begin the week of September 18, involving phased closures throughout Memorial County Park. The aim is to create a shaded fuel break along Pescadero Creek Road and Wurr Road.

The closures are expected to affect a number of popular campsites, trails, and picnic areas in Phase 1. This includes Homestead Flat Campground, Loma Mar Redwoods Trail, and parts of Homestead Trail between trail markers 14 and 17 from September 18–22 & September 25–29. Phase 2 closures will impact Huckleberry Flat Campsites #1 & 2, Sequoia Flat Campsite #A, Azalea Flat Campground, along with several other trails from October 2–6. Phase 3 and 4 will see temporary closures for Tan Oak Flat Picnic Area, Wurr Flat Campground, Sequoia Flat Campsites #C & D, and multiple trails between October 9-27. Additional closures in November 2023 may also be required.

Fire fuel management is essential for reducing the risk of wildfires and maintaining the health of the park's ecosystem. The phased approach, with potential requirements for more work in November, ensures that the park stays accessible to the public as much as possible during this critical work. Methods used in the fuel reduction project may include manual and mechanical removal of trees and brush, as well as use of large equipment to haul and chip woody debris.

Park officials urge visitors to be cautious while visiting the park during this period, paying close attention to signs around work areas. Details of closures can be found in their recent San Mateo County Parks announcement.
