Napa Police Launch Blitz on Phone-Addled DriversSource: California Office of Traffic Safety

Starting tomorrow, the Napa Police Department is rolling out an enforcement blitz targeting drivers who can't keep their hands off their gadgets while driving, specifically those violating California's hands-free law, as reported by the City of Napa press release.

Now, for those who think they can multitask behind the wheel, remember that juggling a steering wheel and a smartphone isn't just a bad idea; it's illegal and comes with fines, and repeat offenders within three years will see points added to their driving records, so think twice before picking up that call or texting. Remember,  the law doesn't have time for your "important" texts or emails while you're rolling down the highway.

Taking a firm stand on the issue, Sergeant Aaron Medina from the Napa PD made it clear that "a driver's focus should be on the road, not their phone," stressing that "That text, phone call, email or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road," as per the department's public notice.

And for those who think their call is too vital to ignore, the Napa police advise pulling over safely to take it or to silence the phone or stash it away before hitting the road, because once you're in traffic it's time for undivided attention on the road, to prevent the risk of an accident that can throw lives into irreversible tragedy, with just a moment's distraction. This crackdown isn't coming out of thin air though – it's funded by those serious about saving lives, courtesy of a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
