Digging into the future, Mira Mesa High School in San Diego kicked off a serious facelift with a celebratory groundbreaking ceremony. The second phase of the school's Whole Site Modernization project is now set in stone, promising enhanced security, new academic spaces, and nixed portable classrooms for the bustling student body.
According to a statement obtained by San Diego Unified School District, Dr. Lamont Jackson expressed the district's dedication: "At San Diego Unified, we are committed to creating schools where all students can thrive and feel a sense of belonging." Building new visitor and administrator parking lot, they will also construct shaded lunch areas and remove outdated portables. Despite the construction, Superintendent Jackson is pumped about the school's future.
The district's commitment hasn't gone unnoticed. Mira Mesa High, which has churned out talent for 49 years, will gain a new student services and classroom facility, and see the current student service center morphed into additional classrooms. This extrasensory event included beats from the school's drumline "Sapphire Sound," bigwig speeches, and the obligatory shovel-in-the-dirt photo op.
Indeed, Mira Mesa High is more than a fleeting memory for local trustee Sabrina Bazzo, who told the San Diego Unified School District, "My children grew up in Mira Mesa and attended this high school, so it’s especially exciting to see these projects come to fruition." With her stakes in the game, upgrades she believes are impacting students and families positively are set to continue district-wide.
Following the first phase of modernizing music buildings and learning spaces and tossing out the old media center for spiffy new workstations, expect this second wave to come crashing in by the Summer of 2027. Along with past upgrades like emerald green baseball fields and cutting-edge culinary arts facilities, Mira Mesa High is on track to becoming a leading campus. Principal Jeff Sabins wasn't shy about gushing over the upgrades, remarking to the San Diego Unified School District, "Our students work hard year-round, and we are thrilled to give them facilities that will complement their hard work."
