Atlanta Men Charged After Illegal Street Race Leads to Police Chase and Hostage SituationSource: Google Street View

Two Atlanta men face a slew of charges following a harrowing escape attempt from what authorities described as an illegal street racing event in Gwinnett County, police sources said. The daredevil chase sparked off on the night of March 23, near Cruse Road and Oakland Road, according to FOX 5.

As officers converged on the site, they were met with the sound of gunfire and a chaotic scene of people scattering in fear, during this confusion, a black Dodge Charger manned by 19-year-old John Anthony Pritchett slammed into a patrol car, trying to escape, and in a subsequent high-speed flight, the vehicle, later identified as stolen, collided with another police car on Scenic Highway and overturned. Pritchett along with 18-year-old Dryan Dradariuus Vereen, bailed from the wrecked car, only to be apprehended by authorities shortly thereafter.

The Charger was carrying two female passengers, who recalled jumping into the car after hearing gunshots and desperately pleaded with Pritchett, whom they did not know before, to let them out, a request he denied, "According to the woman, they asked Pritchett, whom they didn't know, to be let out, but he refused," as stated by FOX 5. In their investigation, officers discovered two firearms inside the crashed Charger, one being a rifle.

Pritchett now faces charges including aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, kidnapping, false imprisonment, and multiple traffic violations, alongside Vereen who has been charged with obstruction and both men have been booked into the Gwinnett County Jail, as reported by Atlanta News First. Both outlets confirmed that there were no injuries to officers as a result of the collisions.
