San Diego Public Library Launches "Spring into STEAM" with a Stellar Space Theme for KidsSource: City of San Diego

The local public library system is kicking off a three-month educational bonanza, tackling everything from constellations to robotics, and they’re making it all about fun. The "Spring into STEAM" initiative, now in its 8th year, aims to get kids from 9 to 12 fired up about learning with a schedule packed with science, technology, engineering, arts, and math programs that are out of this world—literally.

This year's theme is "Space Out!" and the San Diego Public Library (SDPL) isn’t pulling any punches. They've got a lineup of events that will let youngsters learn how to navigate distant galaxies, understand star constellations, and peek into the tech that makes space exploration possible, according to details from sandiego.gov. The programs last from March through May, letting kids log in virtually or show up in person at many library locations throughout the city.

SDPL is hooking up with local science whizzes and organizations to offer four hands-on experiences, like the Portable Planetarium where kids can star hop across the solar system with cool effects and jams. They’ve got this Mad Science session where the tykes do the astronaut thing, building a model space station as if they are going to live in space for real, not to mention learning about the guts of robotics in "Expedition to Mars." To cap it off, the kiddos can figure out their star sign and craft a Stellar Star Projector to bring the night sky into their bedrooms.

And because the SDPL knows how to throw a shindig, they’re hosting a not-to-be-missed blast-off event this Saturday, March 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Serra Mesa-Kearny Mesa Library, the San Diego Air & Space Museum’s Mission Control Bus will be there, so brace yourself for a space-themed activities extravaganza that’s open to all. For the science buffs who like to plan, though, mark your calendars because all these programs are on the house, but spots fill up fast, so registration is a must—just hit up sandiego.gov/steam or swing by any one of the 36 SDPL locations to sign up, the site states.
