An Alexandria man has been slapped with an eight-year prison stretch for the brazen daylight carjacking and robbery of an Uber Eats delivery driver. Daquan Skipper, 27, received his sentence this month for the July 2023 heist outside a Pizza Hut on Maryland Avenue NE, as announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith.

On that sweltering summer day, Skipper, along with his two cronies, confronted the driver who had been securing a delivery order. According to the Department of Justice, Skipper feigned having a gun and snatched the victim's phone and scooter keys. The vehicle proved stubborn under Skipper's rushed attempts to start it, leading him and an accomplice to drag it away manually.

Skipper's prospects plummeted when the delivery man's quick thinking led him to Metropolitan Police Department officers. The ensuing chase saw Skipper ditch the scooter and flee on foot, only to be nabbed by law enforcement. Superior Court Judge Jason Park handed down Skipper's sentence on April 12, 2024, following his January 31 guilty plea. Post-sentence, Skipper is also facing three years of supervised release.

The terrifying encounter occurred outside the eatery located at 1501 Maryland Avenue NE. The ordeal unfolded when the victim was ambushed while preparing for his next delivery. "The defendant threated the victim by telling him he had a gun while gesturing to his waistband as if he did have a gun. The victim believed that the defendant was armed," as reported by the Department of Justice. Fortunately for the delivery driver, a swift response from nearby MPD officers foiled Skipper's getaway.
