Bloomington's Firefighter Ryan Simonis Transitions from Marine to Local HeroSource: CITY OF BLOOMINGTON

From the military to fire rescue, Ryan Simonis proves to be a hero in many uniforms. The Bloomington Fire Department boasts Simonis as one of their finest, who joined them full-time in April 2023 after starting as a paid-on-call firefighter in September 2021. A former Marine with 24 years of experience, Simonis also has a history in police work and federal law enforcement, according to a recent Bloomington Fire Department announcement.

An expert trained to handle chaos, Simonis has earned close to 20 certifications, including in hazardous material operations and various rescue techniques. Working on his Paramedic Fire Science degree, he’s got a bachelor's in international relations and a master's in criminal justice under his belt. Earning all but the dissertation for a PhD in public policy is another feather in his cap.

"I love learning and being part of a team, and I enjoy the constant pace of training and operations," Simonis said of his career in firefighting. This dedication to learning is no small feat for someone balancing the demands of a life dedicated to public service and family.

Off duty, Simonis's life is just as full. He spends time with his "amazing" wife Nikki and their three children, competing worldwide as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt when he can squeeze in the time. Their family, which includes two puppies named Lola and Babs, is a testament to his commitment to kinship and the grounded life of one who serves - according to the department's profile of their esteemed member.

Simonis reflects the true essence of a modern-day warrior, bringing his extensive training and composure from the battleground to the flames of urban calamities. The Bloomington community surely rests easier knowing a man of such virtues is standing watch over their safety and security.
