Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Launches "Wake Up the Night" Grants to Revitalize City's NightlifeSource: City of Boston

Mayor Michelle Wu is putting a new spin on Boston's nightlife with a fresh grant aiming to kickstart the evening economy. The "Wake Up the Night Grant," unveiled by Wu and Boston's Office of Nightlife Economy, is doling out funds to community members and groups looking to inject some life into the city after dark. A cool quarter-million dollars from the American Rescue Plan Act is up for grabs, with grants reaching up to $10,000 apiece for those ready to enlighten the city’s nights.

The application window is wide open, with a deadline of May 28 looming for hopefuls. Nighttime events, free to the public and reflecting a diverse range of interests, are to unfold from July to December 2024. Mayor Wu, referencing the initiative, said in an announcement obtained by boston.gov, “This year we’re trying to make it easier than ever to foster fun programming that showcases the beauty of our communities and support residents and businesses in their efforts to make this summer a safe, enjoyable one for all in Boston.”

Grants are tailored to suit various themes including accessible happenings for people with diverse abilities, cultural expression, intergenerational, spirit-free, weekday, and youth events. "There is a pressing demand for more innovative, inclusive, and accessible nighttime activities," Corean Reynolds, Boston's Director of Nightlife Economy, stated, according to boston.gov. Through the grant, the city plans to pour funds into ideas that have the potential to transform Boston's night scene.

Eligibility for the grant extends to individuals, nonprofits, and businesses collaborating with local partners, with one condition—they must either be Bostonians or demonstrate that the project is driven by locals. The Office of Nightlife Economy, which has been in action since March 2023 and is behind the grant, is committed to amplifying a well-rounded and fair nighttime economy, enhancing life for all Boston residents.
