One month has passed since the disappearance of Cristina Ase, a 62-year-old nursing director from Vancouver, and those close to her are clinging to hope. On Ase's birthday, a group of friends and colleagues assembled in Southeast Portland, turning a day of anticipated celebration into a solemn vigil.
Despite the festive date, the mood was heavy among those who gathered at Glenwood Park. "I’m sure if she was here today, we would’ve been celebrating with her at work, having some special food and celebrating," said Jennifer Williams, a somber note in her voice as reported by KING5. A sense of unease was palpable, as many drove from the Rose Linn Care Center in West Linn, where Ase was employed. Williams, describing the journey added, "Driving here was kind of... kind of gave me a chill just being in this area and knowing that this was the last place her phones were signaled," as per KING5.
Authorities have labeled Ase's disappearance as 'suspicious' and believe it could be tied to "a serious crime or imminently dangerous medical emergency," according to information revealed through a search warrant. Her vehicle, a gray 2013 Toyota RAV4, mysteriously appeared outside her apartment complex a day after she vanished without a trace.
In the continued search, police found what could be critical evidence; a roll of duct tape, and several hairs in Ase's abandoned vehicle. Matt Shempert, a co-worker of Ase's, expressed his anguish to KOIN, revealing, "She was just ripped from us, from her life from everything. It’s important we do what we can for her," further highlighting the community's determination to uncover the truth behind her disappearance. In a display of solidarity and remembrance, community members commemorated Ase's birthday with a cake, singing, and the release of balloons, as reported by KOIN.
