A Tennessee woman was found shot to death in her West Knoxville apartment late Thursday night, with her alleged killer being arrested for DUI in Kentucky mere hours later. Nicole Fanney, 49, was discovered dead with multiple gunshot wounds in an apartment at 3210 Atchley Ridge Way, according to the Knoxville Police Department, as reported by WBIR.

The suspect, identified as Michael Merrick, also 49, was taken into custody in Whitley County, Kentucky, and has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to the incident. The shooting is believed to be “domestic in nature,” KPD stated in a report obtained by WATE. Authorities reported that Merrick fled the scene before police arrived but was subsequently arrested on a DUI charge.

Following the grisly discovery made by officers around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, the Knoxville Police Department began a full investigation into the circumstances behind the death of Fanney. In a statement obtained by WVLT, Communications Director Scott Erland detailed the discovery of Fanney "shot multiple times," and pronounced dead at the scene of the crime.
