Chaos erupted early Thursday morning when a man allegedly forced his way into a motel room at gunpoint, fired at police officers, and then holed up for a tense four-hour standoff. This incident unfolded at the Motel 6 Extended Stay located in the 7700 block of Pasteur Court, near Fredericksburg Road and Medical Drive, reported KSAT.

According to San Antonio Police Department spokesman Sgt. Washington Moscoso, the standoff began shortly before 5:30 a.m. after a security guard noticed a man wearing a mask and brandishing a firearm. As an officer attempted to engage the suspect on the second floor of the motel, the masked man, now identified as 42-year-old Johnny Munoz, initially fired at the officer before subsequently taking over a room and displacing two occupants at gunpoint. Moscoso disclosed that the suspect proceeded to quickly barricade himself inside and shoot at officers again on the first floor "at least four times."

No injuries were reported among law enforcement or civilians, including the evicted motel occupants. After a drawn-out confrontation with the police, Munoz was apprehended at approximately 9:30 a.m. without any physical harm. The specific charges he may face remain to be clarified at this time.

The San Antonio Police had to shut down several lanes of Fredericksburg Road during the crisis, making them only later available to the public. KENS 5 reported that not only were nearby residents urged to stay indoors, but those residing at the Motel 6 were also safely evacuated as tensions mounted. Furthermore, medical offices in the vicinity were notified in light of the proximity to the Medical Center, with SAPD ensuring doctor's practices can continue to operate amidst the ruckus.

As a repercussion of the road closures, Northside Independent School District informed that any student absences or delays resulting from the standoff would not be counted against them, citing the impact on bus routes in the affected area.
