Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office Fuels Fire and EMS Services with $4 Million in Equipment GrantsSource: Facebook / Illinois State Fire Marshal

Firefighters and EMS workers across the Prairie State have a reason to celebrate. The Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office dropped a cool $4 million in grants, spread among 165 departments and ambulance services in dire need of upgraded gear and gadgets. The state's Small Equipment Grant Program, a lifeline for often cash-strapped firehouses and EMS providers, is pumping out funds for everything from nozzles to gurneys.

Illinois is blazing a trail with this innovative grant program, especially when crucial small equipment can burn a hole through tight budgets. In total, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) was swamped with 417 grant applications, with requests nearing $9.5 million. It's clear, the need is as hot as ever.

Illinois State Fire Marshal James A. Rivera, in a statement that echoed through the state, said, "We continue to see and hear about the need and understand the issues fire departments face when it comes to funding across the state. I am proud this year we were able to increase our grant funding to $4 million, a $2.5 million increase from last year, which has allowed us to award over 100 more departments money to purchase lifesaving tools they might not have been able to afford otherwise." The quote was pulled right from the fire marshal's official release.

Bagging one of these grants isn't just a walk in the park, though. Eligible departments had to show they were playing ball with the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) for at least a couple of years before tossing their hats into the ring. The struggle for funding burns on but, for many Illinois firefighters and EMS providers, this cash influx will help put out the fiscal fires they've been fighting to keep their communities safe.
