Lauderhill Man Charged With Attempted Murder In Sunrise Shooting That Left Victim ParalyzedSource: Broward Sheriff's Office

A man has been charged in connection with a shooting that took place in Sunrise, Florida, which left another man paralyzed, local authorities said. The suspect identified as 24-year-old Charles Robert Lewis, from Lauderhill, was arrested and faces charges of attempted murder with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit murder, according to an arrest report.

On the morning of April 14, just before the day broke into the half-light, Juvin Applys was outside his second-floor apartment at the 1700 block of Northwest 60th Avenue. According to Local10, he was approached by two masked individuals. The attackers fired two shots at close range, and Applys was hit in the back, which "immediately fell to the ground and called for help" stated the police report.

Details from the incident report indicate that Applys' mother came to his aid and placed an emergency call. Applys was then taken to Broward Health Medical Center where he received medical attention for his injuries, which included a spinal injury that is expected to cause permanent paralysis, as Flavas of Jamaica highlighted from the police statement. Besides the spinal injury, he also sustained other life-threatening injuries in the attack.

The investigation led detectives to identify Lewis as one of the shooters involved in the crime against Applys. At the time of emergency care, Applys was under intubation and sedation, rendering him unable to provide a statement to the police. Owing to investigative reasons, additional information has been redacted from the publicly released report. Jail records confirm that Lewis is currently being held without bond at the Broward Main Jail. As of now, no other arrests have been made in the case, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
