Lewisville Sets Daytime Watering Restrictions to Curb Waste During Summer HeatwaveSource: steve p2008, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Lewisville is clamping down on water use amid concerns of waste and supply strain during the summer heat. City officials announced daytime outdoor watering restrictions, set to kick in on May 1, as reported by the City of Lewisville, Texas. Sprinklers can't run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., but hand-watering gets a green light anytime

Experts claim that adhering to watering schedules can cut down on water loss caused by evaporation and misuse. With the mercury spiking, as much as 30 percent of water can vanish into thin air when used improperly, according to Aaron Russell, Lewisville Director of Public Services. According to the City of Lewisville, Texas, watering during peak hours "leads to tremendous water waste from evaporation and runoff."

Under the Stage 1 restrictions, addresses play a key role in when the hoses can come out. Homes with even numbers can water their grass on Tuesdays and Saturdays, while odd numbers have Wednesdays and Sundays reserved for keeping their lawns lush. For larger properties like commercial establishments and HOAs, Mondays and Thursdays will be watering days.

Lewisville isn't just cutting down the hours -- they're also giving out tips and tools for smarter water use. They suggest residents "embrace proper irrigation practices," such as using weather-based irrigation controllers endorsed by the EPA's WaterSense. Ideally, a healthy lawn only needs about an inch of water per week, Russell said, as per the City of Lewisville, Texas. By following this, "you're just wasting our precious water supplies," he emphasized for those overindulging their turf.

Residents can snitch on neighbors not playing by the rules via the OurLewisvilleTX app or by dialing 972.219.3510. The city hopes these measures will significantly shrink water waste and maintain a water supply that withstands the Texan sun’s assault. Additionally, locals can take advantage of rebates for installing water-smart gear, with details provided on Lewisville's “Water Conservation” page.
