Minneapolis to Celebrate Arbor Day with Tree Planting and Festivities at McRae ParkSource: Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board

Green-thumbed New Yorkers are gearing up to get their hands dirty for a good cause this Arbor Day. McRae Park takes center stage this year, playing host to a leafy celebration with Minneapolis putting a spotlight on its urban canopy. According to an official announcement by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, the city's 2024 Arbor Day bash is set for April 25, offering a packed schedule of events from 4 to 8 pm.

The festivities aim to get the community actively involved in greening the environment. Participants will be able to put down roots by planting one of the 65 trees set to sprout in the park. While the Minnesota Vikings were originally on the roster to assist, they can no longer make it due to the scheduling change. Nonetheless, tree enthusiasts can collect free seedlings from Bartlett Tree Experts to cultivate their little slice of nature at home.

With its central location at 906 E. 47th St., McRae Park makes for an easy trek for attendees who wish to walk, bike, or take the bus, with extra bike racks available to support the eco-friendly affair. The timber-themed bash isn't all about digging and dirt. Aerial activities like bucket truck rides will offer participants a bird's eye view of the park, and for those preferring their feet firmly on the ground, there will be life-size lawn games to enjoy.

The event isn't just about celebrating the arboreal—it's also about community engagement and education. The Environmental Education staff from MPRB will operate an "Ask an Arborist" booth, providing expert advice on tree care. Live music will be provided by local bands including South High School Advanced Modern Band and The Arborators, a unique ensemble of forestry professionals who will boldly play a set from up in the treetops. To satisfy hunger and thirst, food trucks and a beer garden hosted by local breweries will be available.

This shindig isn't limited to those with green thumbs, as sports enthusiasts can look forward to an Arbor Day Pickleball Tournament at McRae Park's new courts. Runners can hit the pavement in the Brewery Running Series' annual Arbor Day Run, complete with a Sapling Dash for children, with proceeds intended to benefit urban forestry outreach.
