As tensions mount, the Washington State Department of Corrections intensifies its hunt for the inmate who executed a brazen escape from Monroe Correctional Complex last Friday. 59-year-old Patrick Lester Clay is on the lam and believed to be hiding out in Seattle's Central District, an area familiar to him due to family ties. A white GMC Sierra truck, the vehicle Clay allegedly stole to make his getaway, was recovered in that very district; however, the convict has yet to be found. FOX 13 Seattle reported on the mounting concern among Monroe residents in the wake of the escape.

The Department of Corrections detailed that Clay managed to break into a staff office, absconding with a set of keys before peeling off in the stolen truck. The vehicle was later found, but the trail on Clay has gone cold. Monroe Police Department stated the truck was impounded by the State Patrol and is being scoured for evidence. "It made me nervous. I double checked the locks on my doors and hoped that I will be able to sleep just as well as I usually do at night," one Monroe resident, Kim Eichner, expressed her unease to KOMO News. Her anxiety mirrored that of the community, prompting extra precautions around their homes.

The escape has raised red flags about security measures at the correctional facility. Clay, who was serving time for charges including burglary and theft, was not due for release until December 25, 2025. Chris Wright, Communication Director for the DOC, commented on the security breach, "It should not be that easy to grab keys and take off." In his statement, obtained by KOMO News, Wright emphasized the need to focus on recapturing Clay and concurrently, to thoroughly review what went amiss.

The Department of Corrections and local law enforcement have urged the public to report any sightings of Clay, who was last spotted wearing a khaki ensemble and a yellow DOC vest.
