Springfield cops nabbed a man with a defaced, high-capacity handgun after responding to a disturbance call last Friday, authorities said. Edwin Torres Jr., 31, was arrested at a Harrison Avenue apartment when officers observed him clenching the loaded weapon, the Springfield Police Department reported.

Law enforcement rushed to the 0-100 block of Harrison Avenue around 2:15 p.m. following reports of a man wielding a gun, which led them to Torres Jr.'s location just fifteen minutes later. After they gained entry into an apartment, Torres Jr. was caught red-handed in a bedroom with the firearm.

Torres Jr. faces several charges, including being in possession of a firearm without an FID card and possessing both a large-capacity firearm and ammunition without the required card, according to the Springfield Police Department. Officers managed to defuse the perilous situation and relieved Torres Jr. of the gun, which was brimming with 17 rounds.

The seized firearm's serial number had been intentionally obscured, raising the severity of the circumstances surrounding Torres Jr.'s arrest. Further distancing themselves from potential harm, officers added charges related to receiving a firearm with a defaced serial number and possessing a high-capacity magazine or feeding device.
