A tragic incident unfolded in Memphis when a 3-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as reported by FOX13 Memphis.

The Memphis Police Department received a call at 12:52 p.m. and responded to the shooting on the 3900 Block of Bertram Cove. Upon arrival, they found the injured child and swiftly transported him to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, according to Action News 5.

"We're just in shock and we're just praying that's all," said Archshawnda Tinsley, the boy's aunt, in a statement obtained by FOX13, "I just started praying, that's what I did, I just started praying immediately for the baby." He’s in surgery right now, so we’re just waiting to hear something last we’ve known, he was ok when he left here." The details of how the young boy came into contact with the firearm remain undisclosed; however, an adult woman has been detained in connection with the incident as part of the ongoing investigation.

The aunt's call to action is a poignant one, "You young people please put your guns up, make sure they're safe, away from the children," Tinsley told FOX13. The Centers for Disease Control has reported that unintentional injury is the fourth leading cause of death among infants and remains the leading cause of death among children and adolescents aged 1 to 17 with firearms as the leading injury method; children aged 5 and under account for 29.1% of unintentional firearm injury deaths.
