Chicopee Man Charged With Murder in Shooting Death of Father of TwoSource: Hampden County District Attorney's Office

A Chicopee man has been slapped with murder charges in the fatal shooting of a father of two, authorities said. Yesterday, 32-year-old Jalal Williams faced arraignment for the shooting that took the life of Marquis Newson in February, according to the Hampden County District Attorney's office.

Newson, 34, also from Chicopee, was discovered on the ground with a gunshot wound in a parking lot on Springfield Street on the night of February 3. As reported by both MassLive and WWLP, Williams was denied bail during his court appearance in Chicopee District Court.

"Jalal Williams, of Chicopee, was arraigned in Chicopee District Court on Tuesday and held without bail," the district attorney’s office said in a statement obtained by MassLive. The shooting, investigated by Chicopee police, occurred in the Ames Privilege parking lot, directly across from City Hall, thrusting a punctuated end to Newson's life.

Officers responding to reports of gunfire found Newson critically injured, and he was subsequently rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, Newson succumbed to his injuries two days after the attack, said WWLP. His alleged assailant, Williams, is slated to make his next court appearance on June 7. The investigation that swept through the dusky silence of that parking lot now yields a set stage for justice in the face of a life stolen.
