In a nod to more than two decades of shaping city landscapes for the better, Angela Self, City of Garland's Planning Administrator, has been recognized with one of the profession's highest honors - Fellowship in the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP). Self has dedicated over 25 years to urban and suburban planning, with a keen focus on areas grappling with the long-lasting effects of inequality, whether it be social, economic, or environmental.
Self's illustrious career, which spans transformative work in planning for underserved communities, has culminated in her induction into this year's College of Fellows, now standing among an elite group of 33 planning professionals deemed to have made significant contributions to the field. This distinction comes with the expectation that those elevated will continue to serve as leaders and inspire up-and-coming city planners with their work and vision, which is critical as our cities face growing challenges from technological changes to climate adaptation. The honor is bestowed biennially following a strict evaluation by fellow planners and leaders in the field, who consider the nominee's professional practice, teaching and mentoring, research, and public service among the criteria for selection.
During the induction ceremony, where she was featured as the class speaker, Self urged her peers to persist in their critical work, "Members who have earned the FAICP designation are the true leaders of the planning profession," said Karen Wolf, AICP President, as reported by the City of Garland. Wolf emphasized the notable impact fellows like Self have on future generations, aiming to deliver the best for their communities.
