Minnesota Senate Advances $8.8 Million Bill to Bolster Housing Stability and Homelessness PreventionSource: Minnesota Senate DFL

Minnesota has taken another stride in addressing its housing crisis as the state Senate passed a major funding bill aimed at supporting housing stability and homelessness prevention. The bill, known as House File 5242, successfully made it through the Senate early Tuesday, setting the stage for more state-funded support for those in need of a roof over their heads.

The legislative package, which includes labor and transportation elements as well, notably builds on the previous year’s investments aiming to make housing more accessible and to prevent homelessness. This was confirmed in the bill's recent Senate passage, showcasing Senate Democrats’ ongoing commitment to this critical issue. The legislation encompasses a $8.8 million proposal specifically designed to efficiently support Family Homelessness Prevention and Assistance programs.

Senator Liz Boldon, the Vice Chair of the Senate Housing and Homelessness Prevention Committee, highlighted the importance of the bill in a statement, explaining: “Stable and affordable housing is foundational to the wellbeing and safety of all Minnesotans.” She continued, “Every family deserves a safe and stable place to call home. I am proud of our $8.8 million proposal for Family Homeless Prevention and Assistance grants.”

Sensitive to the plight of Minnesota’s younger population, Boldon cited a study from the Wilder Foundation, which reported that children and youth constitute a substantial 40% of the surveyed individuals experiencing homelessness. She emphasized that stable housing was a crucial factor for positive educational and health outcomes for children. “There’s no question that children perform better in school and have better health outcomes when they have a steady roof over their head, which is why this funding is so crucial,” Boldon told the press.

Moreover, the bill initiates the Housing Affordability Preservation Investment (HAPI) Program, an innovative approach to maintain and rejuvenate the existing supply of affordable housing. In her statement, Boldon extended her gratitude to the committee members for their dedication and significant contributions to the legislative effort. The next step for the bill will involve a conference committee aimed to reconcile any differences between the House and Senate versions before it can become law.
