A violent confrontation ended tragically in Southern California on Sunday when a man suspected of domestic violence was shot by Ontario police after a high-speed chase and crash that also left an innocent bystander dead.

The Ontario Police Department was alerted to a disturbance on the 400 block of West Maple Street at around 10 a.m., as per KTLA. The caller reported his sister's ex-boyfriend was outside their residence threatening to break in unless she came outside. According to the caller, the man had a history of domestic violence and had previously threatened his sister with a firearm.

Officers located the suspect, who had an outstanding warrant, seated in his vehicle. Despite orders to surrender, the man refused and fled, leading to a pursuit through the city. The suspect drove at high speeds, even against traffic on a nearby freeway, eventually causing a multi-car collision near the intersection of Grove Avenue and Philadelphia Street, according to details shared by Ontario Police in a press release.

Following the crash, the man attempted to carjack another motorist but, failed and fled on foot. An officer-involved shooting occurred shortly thereafter near Cucamonga Avenue and Philadelphia Street, where the man was armed with a handgun. "A handgun was later recovered at the scene," the Ontario Police Department mentioned. After the altercation, medical attention was provided but the suspect was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Two individuals struck during the suspect’s flight were transported to a medical center. One of the victims succumbed to their injuries while the second victim, suffering minor injuries, was treated and released. The deceased have not been identified pending family notification, reports CBS Los Angeles.

No further information was provided about the exact circumstances that led to the officer-involved shooting. The Ontario Police Department is conducting an investigation into the shooting in coordination with the San Bernardino County District Attorney's office.
