A Michigan mother has been charged with a slew of felonies after a hit-and-run incident in Clinton County on May 18 left two dead and several injured, including eight children. Ashley Marie Monroe, 35, of Perrinton, is accused of being behind the wheel and drunk when her vehicle plowed into a family walking to their grandmother's house, according to the Detroit News.

Monroe, who is pregnant and a mother of four, supposedly attempted to flee the tragic scene but was arrested shortly after. Officials found an open bottle of Crown Royal and prescription anti-depressants in her possession. “Her car was located with severe damage to the front passenger side, consistent with witness statements, as well as blood, hair, and other tissue on her vehicle,” Clinton County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Debra Martinez told WILX. Her breathalyzer test allegedly registered at 0.183, more than twice the legal alcohol limit.

Tragically killed in the accident were Johnathan Esch, 30, of Grand Haven, and Daniel Harris, 42, of Grand Ledge. Monroe faces two counts of operating under the influence causing death, two counts of failing to stop after a crash resulting in death, six counts of operating under the influence causing incapacitating injury, and one count of failing to stop at the scene of a serious injury crash. Her bond was set at $1 million during the arraignment, where Clinton County District Court Judge Michael Clarizio said the community needed to be protected from such acts. Monroe is set to return to court for a Probable Cause Conference on May 30.

The incident injured a swath of family members, ranging from a 2-year-old toddler to a 61-year-old adult. Eight survivors were released from hospital care, but six continue to receive treatment, with a 38-year-old woman listed in critical condition. "With heavy hearts, we pray for all of the individuals and families affected by this incident," sheriff's officials conveyed in a statement obtained by Hoodline.
