A Vista Detention Facility inmate died Monday night following a medical episode that led to his hospitalization the previous day. The 53-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released as authorities seek to notify next of kin, was undergoing treatment at a hospital when he passed away. A Family Liaison Officer is slated to support the family during this time, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies discovered the man in medical distress during a safety check on Sunday morning at around 7:30 a.m. The facility's medical staff were quickly brought in to assess his condition and decided he required immediate hospital care. Transported successfully and without complications, the inmate underwent a medical procedure that evening. However, his condition worsened the following day, and efforts to save his life were unsuccessful. He was initially held after an arrest on June 13 by the Oceanside Police Department for assault with a deadly weapon and was believed to be experiencing homelessness at the time.
An ongoing investigation into the cause and manner of his death has been launched by the Sheriff's Homicide Unit, as mandated by protocol for any in-custody deaths. Additionally, the Citizens' Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) representative has been notified about the incident. An autopsy performed by the Medical Examiner's Office is still pending, which aims to determine what caused the inmate's death conclusively, as per the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
