By 10:15 p.m., a semblance of order was restored as WVLT reported that one lane remained closed during vehicle recovery and cleanup operations. According to Mark Nagi, the reopening process was gradual, with the left lane becoming accessible fairly soon after the blaze was contained. However, the remaining lane took several more hours to clear, a testament to the severity of the incident and the extensive efforts required to assure the thorough safety and functionality of the freeway before allowing the public back onto it.
As of 10:34 p.m., Nagi stated, "The left lane of I-40 East in Roane County is back open after a tractor-trailer fire at Mile Marker 356." This statement, reported by WBIR, marked the partial easing of the traffic restriction that had snarled the evening's commute.
