Motorists in North County experienced significant delays Friday afternoon following a car fire on Interstate 170. The incident occurred near the intersection of I-170 and St. Charles Rock Road, with visible flames reported around 5 p.m. While the freeway remained open, two right lanes were shut down to facilitate the emergency response, as confirmed by First Alert 4.
The situation intensified as at least one vehicle caught fire in a separate but simultaneous event near I-170 and Midland Boulevard, according to My St. Louis News. The site reported that fire crews responded quickly, but information about potential injuries was not immediately available. Traffic backups during rush hour left commuters stranded and looking for alternate routes.
Authorities worked diligently to extinguish the blaze in the grassy area off the highway and manage the aftermath of the crash. As the fire crews persisted in clearing the wreckage, traffic disruption stretched into the evening, with "Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes, if possible," as stated by FOX 2 Now.
