Early Monday morning, an extra-alarm fire broke out in a Portage Park home on the Northwest Side of Chicago. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Fire Department responded to the 2-11 fire in the 5900 block of West Waveland Avenue before 5:30 a.m. At this time, it has not been confirmed if there have been any injuries as a result of the blaze.
Meanwhile, eyewitness footage captured by Chopper 7 illustrated a scene where dozens of firefighters were to swiftly engage the flames engulfing the house located at Waveland and Marmora avenues. This residential conflagration caused temporary disruptions in local transportation; the CTA rerouted #91 Austin buses via Austin, Irving Park, Central, Addison, and Austin. The fire's cause and whether anyone was harmed remain unknown, as reported by ABC 7 Chicago.
The firefighting effort included multiple fire crews and apparatus, which were dispatched to contain and extinguish the fire. The presence of first responders and their equipment, coupled with the rerouted bus lines, suggested a significant impact on the morning commute for residents.
Authorities have yet to release additional details regarding the blaze, including the extent of the damage to the property or whether to potentially look for signs of arson. As the situation continued to unfold, residents were advised to avoid the area and heed instructions from emergency services. Further updates are expected as investigators assess the scene and more information becomes available to the public.
