A car accident yesterday morning in the Fort Sanders area of Knoxville resulted in a fatality after a man reportedly suffered a medical event while driving. According to a statement from the Knoxville Police Department, officers arrived at the scene around 4 a.m. to find a Honda Civic that had collided with a street sign at the intersection of Highland Ave and 19th Street.
The initial findings from the crash reconstruction team indicate that the driver, who was alone in the vehicle was discovered unresponsive when the officers arrived, and the crash resulted from what appears to likely have been a sudden health-related issue. The man was promptly taken to an area hospital, but despite the efforts to save his life, he later died as a result of his condition.
Currently, the identity of the driver is being withheld by authorities as they work to notify his next of kin. The Knoxville Police Department has not provided further details about the possible medical issue the man experienced or the ongoing investigation.
