A tragic event unfolded on Monday at Foster Avenue Beach, where a man was pulled unresponsive from the waters of Lake Michigan. The Chicago Police Department reported that the incident took place just before 5:45 p.m., and despite the efforts of emergency crews who administered CPR, the man’s condition remained critical as he was rushed to Weiss Memorial Hospital. The man, whose age and identity have yet to be disclosed, was pronounced dead following the unfortunate event, a confirmation that came from The Cook County Medical Examiner on Tuesday morning.
Sources at NBC 5 Chicago reported that while beachgoers initially seemed unaware of the unfolding drama, the area was later revisited by police as the gravity of the situation set in. "The police were already here, and we saw that they were going down onto the end of the pier and pulling out somebody’s bag," Kaylee Howard, a visitor to the Chicago beach, told NBC 5. She expressed concerns about the beach’s safety, highlighting that "it was really scary because this area is easy to trip on and the water's deep and people don’t know that."
According to ABC7 Chicago, both the Chicago Fire Department and Chicago Police Department were present at the scene, with first responders seen performing CPR on the man before his hospitalization. There was no further information available concerning the circumstances that led to the man entering the water or the events that followed his being pulled to shore.
Reflecting on the accident, another beach visitor, Emmit Michel, emphasized caution to fellow swimmers. "It's important to check what color the flag is," Michel said. "Even if you're a strong swimmer that current can get you."
