Commuters experienced significant delays this morning when a semi-truck caught fire on Florida's Turnpike, effectively shutting down southbound traffic near Winter Garden. The Orange County Fire Rescue Department (OCFRD) responded to the emergency after the fire was reported at about 8:20 AM near Mile Marker 272, according to WFTV. Firefighters worked to quickly contain the blaze, which was isolated to the truck's passenger compartment, leaving the trailer unharmed.
The direct impact of the incident was not only to those immediately on the road but also to a broader swath of the central Florida commute. The Florida Highway Patrol, reporting to WESH, indicated that as units arrived to handle the situation, the fire caused all southbound lanes to be shut down at SR-50, compelling drivers to seek alternative routes through an already pressured traffic system.
While the immediate response by OCFRD crews was effective in dousing the flames, the disruption to the roadway was substantial. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) highlighted a major crash and police activity resulting from the incident, with traffic backing up several miles behind Exit 278. The FDOT's traffic updates showed that, following the fire, the ramp to Exit 272, S.R. 50 West, had to be closed.
An added layer of complexity was introduced as commuters were forced to find detours around the incident. The Florida Highway Patrol suggested that drivers needing to continue south should exit the Florida Turnpike at U.S. 27 and proceed to SR-50 as an alternative route.
