Witnesses captured video footage of the intense aftermath, with one local, Kee-Kee Fason, reflecting on the gravity of the situation to WREG. She called it a 'life or death' scenario and offered her prayers for the truck's driver. The fire caused by the crash required extensive work by emergency crews to manage and for several hours, westbound I-40 was shut down before the Tennessee Department of Transportation was able to reopen the interstate just after 6:15 a.m. that same morning.
FOX13 Memphis reported that the first calls about the accident were made just after 11 p.m. last night. The collision not only took two lives but also left the semi-truck in a severely damaged state, exacerbating the challenge to safely manage the scene.
