Two Houston firefighters were injured shortly when a vehicle collided with a Houston Fire Department truck blocking traffic on the northbound Gulf Freeway near the Friendswood/Clear Lake City Boulevard exit. The firefighters were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver involved was also hospitalized and reported to be in critical condition.
KHOU reports that Houston Police Sgt. Mike Barrow told investigators the vehicle that struck the fire truck appeared to be traveling at high speed, with no clear signs that the driver attempted to brake before impact. A DWI unit was called in to determine whether impairment was a factor. Investigators remained on the northbound lanes for several hours documenting the scene.
A Familiar Danger for Responders
Collisions involving vehicles striking emergency responders at crash scenes have become an ongoing hazard. In November, an 18-wheeler hit a Houston Fire Department engine on U.S. 59, sending four firefighters to the hospital, the Houston Chronicle reported. HFD Chief Thomas Muñoz said at the time, “Blocking traffic on the freeway is one of the most dangerous tasks we do.” Incidents like these have prompted renewed calls from city officials and the firefighters’ union for drivers to slow down and give emergency crews space on busy highways.
Move Over or Slow Down
Texas law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights. The Texas Department of Transportation notes that violating the law can result in fines, with penalties increasing if someone is seriously injured. TxDOT advises motorists to change lanes away from roadside responders when safe, or to slow down by 20 mph below the posted speed limit if a lane change isn’t possible. State officials and troopers have increased enforcement and public outreach to reduce these roadside collisions.
Investigation Continuing
Investigators were still processing the scene early Saturday, and Houston police had not announced any charges. The investigation may include toxicology testing and a review of vehicle data as detectives determine whether speed or impairment played a role. Authorities are asking anyone with video or information about the crash to come forward.
