New Century Chamber Orchestra concludes its 25th anniversary season with an inaugural, week-long festival that celebrates the orchestra's illustrious history in three separate, one-night-only programs. These performances also mark Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg's final appearances as music director following nine seasons of leadership and artistic innovation.
The 25th anniversary season celebrations conclude with a festival closing night that features the rarely-performed theater orchestra version of Rhapsody in Blue in an all-Gershwin extravaganza. In their biggest concert of the season, New Century and Nadja will celebrate their birthday with a variety of friends, including pianist Anne-Marie McDermott, who returns for the first time since 2013. Called an "exquisite player" by the San Jose Mercury News, Anne-Marie McDermott was praised for her 2013 debut performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 12 with New Century, which was labeled as a "standout show." Former Adler and Merola graduates Melody Moore (soprano) and Efrain Solis (baritone) return to New Century with a selection of songs from the Great American Songbook. Ms. Moore makes her fifth appearance with the orchestra, most recently performing Britten's Illuminations in September 2012 which San Francisco Classical Voice described as "powerful and expressive." Baritone Efrain Solis performed alongside Adler Fellows in New Century's February 2014 production of Donizetti's rarely-performed Rita, as the "robust" Gasparo (San Franciso Chronicle) and featured as a special guest artist at their 2016 gala. The final work on the program is a suite from An American in Paris arranged for the ensemble by Clarice Assad and recently received by enthusiastic audiences during New Century's most March performances with Chanticleer.
