Oakland Natives Give Back Hosts Ninth Annual "Attend and Achieve Back to School Rally" for Oakland Students’ School Preparedness

Since 2008, Oakland Natives Give Back (ONGB), an Oakland-based nonprofit, has held an annual Attend and Achieve Back to School Rally with the intention of helping Oakland public school youth start the school year prepared to learn. Students, parents and legal guardians are invited to the Back to School Rally on August 13, 2017, from noon to 5:30 p.m. at Oakland City Hall Plaza.

As research suggests a child’s attendance in the first month of school is predictive of his or her attendance for the year, this rally helps ensure that students have most of the tools they need to start the school year prepared to attend and achieve all year long.

Each year, the event attracts over 1,000 participants and features celebrity appearances, speakers, performances, free food, and a range of prizes. This year, the Back to School Rally aims to make the following available to the Oakland community:

• 250 student bus passes for high school students

• 1500+ pairs of shoes

• 2500+ students backpacks filled with age-appropriate school supplies

• 1000+ books
