The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is rolling out its roadwork plans, aiming to give some much-needed TLC to the Schuylkill Expressway. The project, priced at a hefty $36.8 million, plans to freshen up roughly five miles of Interstate 76 along with a thorough revamp of ramps and bridge repairs galore.

This Sunday night, May 12: PennDOT's going to put the clamps on traffic by yanking barriers, and lane closures between Montgomery Drive and Spring Garden Street interchanges. Expect closures from 9:00 PM to the antemeridian hours of 5:00 AM. And to add to that, shoulder closures on eastbound I-76 are coming atcha between City Avenue and I-676 interchanges, Monday through Friday, same night-time hours, for a spicy blend of guide rail setups and utility work.

PennDOT's announcement advises city slickers to pad their travel time. After all, delays and backups are set to join the evening mix. The festivities, including milling, overlaying, and sign replacement shenanigans, are all contingent, rain checks are a real possibility. PennDOT's grand plan involves more than just a little nip and tuck for I-76. The expressway’s getting a full makeover - from concrete base repairs to minor grade adjustments and nifty new pavement markings.
