A Detroit man has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for the fatal shooting of a woman during a botched car accident scheme in 2021, state officials said.

According to The Detroit News, 21-year-old Riondre Griffin was handed a 25-50 year sentence for second-degree murder on top of two to five years for carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle and an additional two years for a felony firearm charge, all to be served consecutively, following the incident that took place on November 7, 2021 where Griffin and three accomplices crashed into the victim's car with a pickup truck in order to get her to stop and exchange money for damages, but when she refused and fled, Griffin shot her four times according to the Michigan Department of Attorney General's press release.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel expressed her hopes for the sentencing to provide closure, stating, "A young woman’s life was tragically cut short by meaningless, senseless violence,” according to an announcement by the Michigan Department of Attorney General.

In contrast, Griffin's lawyer Craig Tank challenged the fairness of the sentence, alleging misconduct by the judge, "The judge did a better job prosecuting the case than the members of the Attorney General's Office," Tank told The Detroit News, with plans to appeal the case however declining to further comment.
