Miami-Dade Judge Denies Bond for Ex-Police Lieutenant Accused of Attempted MurderSource: Miami-Dade Corrections

A former Miami-Dade Police lieutenant is behind bars without bond after a judge ruled against her release amid charges of attempted murder. Evelyn Fernandez, 52, appeared in Miami-Dade Circuit Court where Judge Christine Hernandez opted to keep her in custody, reported WSVN on May 1st.

Fernandez engaged in a standoff with police forces for nearly half a day last October, after allegedly opening fire at her ex-boyfriend David Sanchez's vehicle. She later took refuge in the attic of a home where she remained until flushed out by tear gas. During the court proceedings, Sanchez, a retired Miami Police Major, expressed his fear for his safety, indicating that Fernandez previously threatened him with lethal intent. "She pointed a gun at me and I fled for my life for 3 and a half miles while she was shooting at me," Sanchez told the court, as per CBS News Miami.

Contesting the allegations, Fernandez's daughter Kristina, struck back at her mother's accuser, questioning the validity of his claims and showing support for her mother, who is also battling both colon and lung cancer. "I am very upset about what was said today in court because this is he said, she said," Kristina Fernandez said in a statement obtained by CBS News Miami. She added a personal perspective on her mother's ability as a former law enforcement officer, "My mom is a retired police officer and if she really wanted to shoot someone, she would have hit them."

Fernandez's defense attorneys highlighted her 25 years of service within the community and pointed to PTSD as a factor, according to WSVN. Fernandez is expected to return to court on July 29, where she will face charges that include attempted first-degree murder with a deadly weapon and battery on a law enforcement officer. Undeterred by the court's decision, Kristina declared the fight for bond is not over, while empathetically extending thoughts to the alleged victim: "I keep praying for him and hope we can settle everything," she told CBS News Miami.
