San Antonio Spurs Legend George Gervin Celebrates Grand Re-Opening of Local AcademySource: Google Street View

The north side's George Gervin Academy celebrated its grand re-opening on Blanco Road, complete with a special appearance by the Spurs Coyote, much to the delight of the fans and families who came to check out the fresh digs. The event showcased the campus which caters to pre-K through fifth-grade students and is set to introduce a new playground in the upcoming weeks.

Community members were given the chance to fully embrace and tour the revamped facilities. They could also get more information on the educational support systems offered at the school, now dubbed El Hombre de Hielo Campus, which Superintendent Nathan Hawkins described as pivotal to the future success of the attending youngsters. "We didn’t have the opportunity to do the big grand re-opening we were hoping for," Hawkins expressed, citing the constraints caused by the pandemic. He added, "We want to make sure kids leave here with the proper education, (and) are able to tackle life’s problems in the future," in a statement obtained by KENS5.

The George Gervin Academy originally opened in 1995, is a project born of the Spurs icon's ambition to give back to his community. In partnership with his sister, Barbara Gervin Hawkins, the duo set up a tuition-free, dual-language program across the academy's three campuses. The institution also provides free transportation and meals, ensuring accessible, quality education for the kids of San Antonio. The school's leadership was eager to have families come, to enroll their kids, and to learn about the support available to their children.
