Shelby County Inmate Charged with Assault After Attacking Nurse at 201 Poplar FacilitySource: Shelby County Sheriff's Office

An inmate already behind bars for allegedly attacking a woman with a chainsaw now faces additional charges after he assaulted a nurse at 201 Poplar, as per the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. The man, identified as Cordarius Fisher, 32, became aggressive and struck the healthcare worker multiple times after being asked to maintain a distance, authorities said.

The confrontation occurred when the nurse was distributing medication on April 27. Fisher, awaiting transfer to another unit, ignored requests to step away and proceeded with a threatening gesture. In the exchange that followed, the nurse, backed by a corrections officer, was compelled to use physical force to push Fisher back. Despite their efforts, the inmate landed several punches on the nurse's face, prompting self-defense responses from both the nurse and the officer, Action News 5 reported.

The nurse, a Mid-South mother of two, spoke out about the terrifying ordeal, revealing the emotional and physical toll it took on her. "I could’ve lost my life and you know I have family. I have kids," she recounted, detailing injuries including a torn lip and swollen face. Highlighting the lack of security, she stressed, "That’s negligence on the security part because he was supposed to be in handcuffs," as per WREG.

The sheriff's office has yet to comment on why Fisher was unattended at the time of the attack. However, Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner recently addressed the issue of detainees being able to circumvent jail security measures. "But actually, the door is able to slide open," Bonner explained, indicating systemic shortcomings contributing to such incidents, according to an interview with WREG.

Following the attack, additional officers intervened to subdue Fisher. The incident, caught on video, supports the claims made in the nurse's report. As a result of this violence, Fisher faces a misdemeanor assault charge. His actions have added a grave dimension to his list of offenses and he remains detained on a $35,000 bond, FOX13 Memphis noted. He is due in court on Friday to address the latest allegation.
