A Washington, D.C. man, identified as Demann Shelton, aged 31, has been convicted on several charges including unlawful possession of a firearm and drug paraphernalia. The verdict was the result of a December 2019 encounter with Metropolitan Police Department officers who found Shelton with a loaded gun and illicit materials in a car.

Jurors handed down the guilty judgment after a trial in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. According to a statement released by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and MPD Chief Pamela Smith, the charges included carrying a pistol without a license and unlawful possession of ammunition. The Honorable Lynn Leibovitz has scheduled to decisively hand down sentencing on July 12.

The evidence that nailed Shelton's conviction detailed an instance on December 18, 2019, in which he was discovered in an illegally parked vehicle near 90 L Street NW. Shelton, then seated in the back, was prompted by officers to exit the vehicle. A search ensued, revealing a .40 caliber Glock 23 handgun equipped with a laser light and extended magazine, among other items personal to Shelton, detailed the U.S. Department of Justice.

The firearm and a digital scale sporting white powder residue were uncovered inside a large black jacket located near where Shelton was seated. The jacket also contained personal identifiers relating directly to Shelton: his photo ID, a credit card, and mail. Moreover, officers discovered a sum of $2,443 in cash concealed in Shelton’s pants pocket. Following the verdict, Judge Leibovitz ordered the defendant to remain in custody pending the upcoming sentencing. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Luke Albi and Leah Paisner.
