New In The Neighborhood: Wonderland

Good news, Lower Haighters: our collective hunger for a Chinese restaurant has finally been quelled. Introducing Wonderland, which opened yesterday at the corner of Haight and Fillmore.

As we noted back in May, Wonderland is owned by Ningzhe Wen, previously from Wild Pepper in the Mission. Wen tells us he designed the menu at Wonderland to be similar to Wild Pepper's, but simplified, and with some new additions. You'll find all your usual Chinese restaurant staples — Kung Pao Chicken, Sesame Beef, Sweet & Sour Pork — but also an extensive list of options for vegetarians. The innaugural menu features 7 steamed vegetable dishes, 15 veggie & tofu items, and 13 variations of popular dishes incorporating meatless chicken. Prices for entrees at Wonderland range from $7.95 to $13.95, the most expensive dish being the Chef's Special King Salmon Fillet. Wonderland will offer both takeout and delivery, serving an area stretching from the Castro to California Street. But Wen hopes to create a great dine-in experience as well. He's placing extra emphasis on service at the restaurant, determined to get to know customers and make them feel at home. He'll also offer some daily specials that will only be available at the restaurant. As it just opened yesterday, Wonderland still has a few hurdles to clear. The beer and wine license hasn't yet been transferred from Clay Oven, and they won't start offering delivery until they feel their kitchen can handle it. Still, you can peep their menu at their website — or better yet, drop by the restaurant and check it out in person. Wonderland is open 7 days a week, from 11am to 9:30pm, at 500 Haight St.
