Back in 2010, the family that owns the local Gold's Gym franchises in SOMA, Castro, Marin and Oakland vowed to sever it's franchise agreement with Gold's Gym International corporation because of significant donations to anti-LGBT causes by the company's CEO, Robert Rowling. Rowling reportedly donated $2 million dollars to conservative Karl Rove's PAC American Crossroads, which gives significant amounts of financial support to anti-LGBT candidates who oppose LGBT equality. The owner, Don Dickerson, expressed his disappointment in a statement on Facebook saying,
"Gold’s Gym San Francisco has long been a pillar of the gay community. We will continue to be. It is very unfortunate that the CEO of TRT Holdings has chosen this course of action. We do not support it in any way."
Dickerson vowed to end the relationship in two years when the franchise agreement was set to expire. The franchise agreement ended yesterday and Dickerson made good on his promise. In a letter to members of the Castro location, the company announced they will be doing business as Fitness SF effective Saturday, September 15th. Members will be receiving new key tags and parking stickers. The gym is also a member of the International Health, Racquet and Sports Club Association which has over 9,000 member clubs. This agreement will allow gym-goers the ability to visit other gyms in other locations around the world at discounted rates. Gym members will continue to have access to all the newly branded Fitness SF locations in SOMA, Oakland and Marin.
