Hearth Coffee Roasters Cafe Set For October In The Castro

We reported back in February that Hearth Coffee Roasters was opening a cafe in the old Sun Days Tanning spot (3985 17th Street) near Jane Warner Plaza at 17th and Castro. It looks like we'll be seeing them open up at the beginning of October, according to owners Amelia Akbar and James Kafader. According to Amelia, the new locally-owned sit-down cafe will set itself apart from other coffee houses in the Castro by offering their own roasted organic coffee from their in-house roaster and offering pastries from their 100% organic in-house bakery. They also aim to rethink the role of coffee in cuisine by pairing the unique flavors of their fine, organic, single-origin beans with complimentary savory and sweet foods. Their selections will also include more traditional pairings with wine and beer. "We became a certified sommelier and home beer brewer in order to offer a great selection of beers and wine carefully paired with small plates (of food)," said Amelia. As we reported in February, owners Amelia and James previously ran Brown Owl Coffee Cafe in Parkside to some critical acclaim from The Bold Italic and the Bay Guardian.
