Back in September, we were excited to report that Brenda’s Meat and Three was set to take over Blue Jay Cafe at 919 Divisadero. Well, the (short) wait is over, and the restaurant will open its doors at 8am tomorrow morning, which also happens to be Halloween.
We stopped by a neighborhood happy hour yesterday in which the Brenda's crew offered a sampling of the menu, and got a taste of the gumbo, shrimp hush puppies, mini pulled pork biscuit and calas (deep-fried rice fritter donuts). All maintained the same level of southern appeal found at the original Brenda’s on Polk Street.
Tablehopper nabbed a first look at the full menus, which include brunch (biscuits and gravy, sweet potato pancakes), lunch (seafood po’boy, spicy fried chicken) and supper, (chicory and watermelon salad, natchitoches meat pie basket). Here's a peek at some of the items on the weekend brunch menu:
Brenda’s Meat and Three is a joint venture between Brenda Buenviaje, her wife Libby Truesdell and Andre and Jennifer Larzul (who owned Blue Jay Cafe along with Alamo Square Seafood Grill and Revolution Cafe in The Mission).

“He’s the nicest French guy I’ve ever met,” Brenda told us in reference to Andre. “I’m very excited. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time. Before I opened the original one I had met with [Larzul] about partnering. That was about 10 years ago ... I finally got to a place where I was ready to do this concept. so I emailed Andre and he emailed me right back.”
Andre Larzul is himself very excited about this project and keeping the same space as Blue Jay. “It’s great. I think we found a perfect partnership," he told us. "I’m going to focus on the front of the house and Brenda will take care of the kitchen. I’m excited for the future.”
Originally set to open today (Thursday), the team decided to push the date back a day to make sure all their ducks were in a row.
Starting Friday, Brenda’s will be open from 8am to 10pm, six days a week (closed on Tuesdays). Breakfast will be served from 8am to 3pm, lunch from 11am to 5pm, and dinner will be served from 5pm onwards.
In addition to the food menu, the new spot will serve beer, wine and brunch classics like mimosas. It should also be noted that they will not be taking reservations, so if there’s a wait, remember to be patient.
