There's a new tenant at the former recycling center space at the Market Street Safeway — at least for the next month.

A Christmas tree lot popped up at the location a few days ago, and officially opened for business yesterday. It's hosted by the Delancey Street organization, which operates four lots in San Francisco and three in the East Bay, as well as 16 others in additional cities and states.

Delancey used to run a Christmas tree lot at the northeast corner of Market and Sanchez, but that site is currently being prepped by Greystar to host an 87-unit mixed-use development.

All Delancey lots features a variety of tree sizes and shapes, as well as mistletoe, wreaths, indoor tree lights, living potted pines, tree removal bags and water bowls. Not only do sales from the lots benefit the Delancey Street Foundation, but the lots themselves act as training opportunities for Delancey Street residents.

Delancey provides housing for "people who have hit bottom," in the organization's words, with the goal of helping them transition to leading "a productive crime-free, drug-free life of purpose and integrity." In the process, Delancey teaches its residents real-world skills, like the basics of sales and operations that go into running a Christmas tree lot. You can find out more about Delancey's mission here.

The tree lot at 2020 Market Street will be open from 9am to 10pm, 7 days a week, through Christmas.
