Back in October, we reported that Repose Coffee was slated to open its doors at 262 Divisadero St., the space formerly occupied by Magpie and Rye. At the time, owner James Grogan predicted they’d be in business by early November. Now, with 2014 behind us and the shop still under construction, we figured it was time for an update.
We checked back in with Grogan, who explained that the delay was due to the fact that during construction they found an additional space on the premises (an old boiler room) that they could turn into a larger ADA bathroom than they had originally planned. Grogan was delighted by the discovery, since it meant that he could now use more of the tiny space to fit a larger food preparation area.
Originally, he only planned to have limited food items along with the Ritual coffee he’d be serving. Now, he’ll be offering the full menu available at Repose's existing Sebastopol location, which includes grilled paninis, quesadillas and salads. He is also in conversations with several local bakers to provide pastries and such, including Sweetmue
, the Asian-inspired French baker we mentioned previously.
“We have a big following for some of our items,” he told us. “We do a gluten-free quesadilla that comes with pesto and cheddar that a lot of people like.” Although the prices will be different for the San Francisco location, you can see Repose's full menu here
He hopes to have a soft opening by sometime in February, with limited hours during the week. According to him, construction crews are just finishing up with some electrical and plumbing elements.
Grogan, aware of the news that Sightglass Coffee plans to open a location
kitty-corner to his business, isn’t worried about competition on the block. “I think that it’s totally fine because what I’ve noticed is that people like specific roasters and, living in the city, there is a coffee shop on every corner, and there are so many people here that there’s room for a different roaster on every block,” said Grogan.
Be on the lookout for Repose next month. Also, for any of you looking to pick up some extra cash, Grogan is looking for experienced baristas. You can contact him through the website here
