Just this morning, we were wondering whether the Castro could be considered a burgeoning foodie neighborhood. But this afternoon, SFist brings word that Pesce, Market Street's seafood-focused Italian spot, is set to close its doors on Sunday, Sept. 13th.

The restaurant moved from its more intimate location on Polk to open in the former Jake's on Market space two years ago. And with a new neighborhood and more space came challenges, it seems.

Executive chef and owner Ruggero Gadaldi told SFist that after moving to the Castro, "We noticed how the change in neighborhood and the expansion in square footage affected the concept's integrity." Though he said he's sad to close down, he thanked the restaurant's loyal fans "and the regulars who we got to know intimately since Pesce opened its doors."

Known for its happy hour, seafood pastas, and more upscale ambiance than many of its Market Street neighbors, Pesce has been well-liked in the neighborhood, with a solid four-star rating on Yelp

For those who'll miss Pesce's presence on the block, you've got just 10 days to stop by and say your goodbyes. There's no word yet on who might replace the restaurant once it closes, but apparently a new project is already in the works.
