Café Sophie Won't Be Returning To The CastroPhoto: Brian Ray/Hoodline

Last week, we asked readers to chime in with any stories with loose ends that needed updating. Reader Juaquin42 was curious about Café Sophie's location at 3463 16th St.:

"What's going on with Cafe Sophie? It looks like the renovations have been complete for awhile, and there is a realty sign in the window - but their logo and various things are still in there. Any chance of them coming back? Best coffee shop in the area."

While we reported in June that the cafe might not return after closing for an earthquake retrofit, we never fully stated the outcome. A post on Café Sophie's Facebook page on August 31st gives us a final answer:

"Good news and bad news: The good news is that the city-mandated earthquake retrofit project is complete. The bad news is that we've decided for a number of different reasons that Cafe Sophie will not be re-opening as you know it today. We are filled with many emotions, mostly which is sadness but we are hopeful that someone special will bring new life to the space soon."

Café Sophie opened on 16th Street in June 2011. With this closure, plus that of Jumpin' Java on Noe, the Castro's options for casual cafe hangouts for conversation, work or studying have narrowed somewhat, even as the neighborhood's notorious cluster of coffee outlets continues to expand with this week's addition of Wildcraft Espresso Bar.

Though there's no news yet on what might be replacing it, the 1,400-square-foot retail space is listed on Loopnet for $125,000. We'll keep an eye out for the next business to move in. In the meantime, what do you hope to see there?
